Many Durham families begin their autism journey through Duke’s Autism Clinic or UNC TEACCH in nearby Chapel Hill. Both are outstanding resources, but both come with significant waitlists. Others start after Durham Public Schools flags a concern through their Exceptional Children program.
DPS can evaluate your child and provide classroom accommodations through an IEP, but a school evaluation is not a medical diagnosis and won’t unlock insurance or Medicaid coverage for ABA therapy. And a Duke or TEACCH referral, while thorough, may take months before your child is seen.

North Carolina’s autism insurance mandate (SB 676) requires most state-regulated health plans to cover ABA therapy, and NC children under 3 with Medicaid can begin ABA services without a diagnosis. For families on Medicaid, ABA is covered for children under 21 through the EPSDT benefit. In Wake County, Alliance Health is the regional Tailored Plan (LME/MCO) that manages Medicaid behavioral health services, including ABA authorization.
