If your pediatrician has raised concerns or your child’s teacher has flagged something, the next step can feel overwhelming in a market this busy. Waitlists for developmental evaluations in the Triangle are long, and many families don’t realize they have options beyond the hospital system.
Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) can evaluate your child and provide classroom support through an IEP, but a school evaluation is not a medical diagnosis and won’t unlock insurance or Medicaid coverage for ABA therapy. A formal autism diagnosis requires a qualified medical professional: a licensed physician, psychiatrist, or psychologist.
Our evaluations are conducted by a licensed psychologist and provide the documentation your family needs to access insurance-covered ABA, often with significantly shorter wait times than the hospital route. North Carolina’s autism insurance mandate (SB 676) requires most state-regulated health plans to cover ABA therapy, and NC children under 3 with Medicaid can begin ABA services without a diagnosis. For families on Medicaid, ABA is covered for children under 21 through the EPSDT benefit. In Wake County, Alliance Health is the regional Tailored Plan (LME/MCO) that manages Medicaid behavioral health services, including ABA authorization.
