For many Apex families, the autism journey starts with a concern from a teacher at one of the WCPSS schools or a flag from a pediatrician, followed by the question: “Now what?” The answer often involves a months-long waitlist.
Wake County Public School System can evaluate your child and provide classroom support through an IEP, but a school evaluation is not a medical diagnosis and won’t unlock insurance or Medicaid coverage for ABA therapy. A formal autism diagnosis requires a qualified medical professional: a licensed physician, psychiatrist, or psychologist.
Our evaluations are conducted by a licensed psychologist and provide the documentation your family needs to access insurance-covered ABA, often significantly faster than hospital-system waitlists in the Triangle. If you’ve already been through your pediatrician or WCPSS, we can pick up wherever that path left off.

North Carolina’s autism insurance mandate (SB 676) requires most state-regulated health plans to cover ABA therapy, and NC children under 3 with Medicaid can begin ABA services without a diagnosis. For families on Medicaid, ABA is covered for children under 21 through the EPSDT benefit. In Wake County, Alliance Health is the regional Tailored Plan (LME/MCO) that manages Medicaid behavioral health services, including ABA authorization. We help families understand their benefits and handle prior authorization from day one.

Alliance Health manages Medicaid behavioral health services for Wake County. ABA is covered for children under 21 through the EPSDT benefit, and children under 3 with Medicaid can start without a formal diagnosis. We handle the authorization process for you.
