ABA Therapy and Autism Services in Charlotte

Charlotte has no shortage of ABA clinics. What it lacks is ABA that works around your family’s real life. B Above Services delivers evidence-based ABA therapy and autism diagnostic evaluations in your child’s natural environment: at home, at school, and throughout the Charlotte community, not in a clinical waiting room across town during rush hour on I-77.

Why In-Home ABA Makes Sense in Charlotte

Charlotte is sprawling. Whether you’re in Ballantyne, University City, or out in Huntersville, getting to a clinic multiple times a week means fighting traffic on 485 or Independence Boulevard, rearranging school pickups, and pulling your child out of the environment where they actually need to practice their skills.

Our Natural Environment approach eliminates all of that. Therapy happens in the real settings where your child lives and learns: at home during morning routines, at school during transitions, or out in the community during everyday activities. The skills stick because they’re being built where they’ll actually be used, not in a therapy room your child visits and forgets about by bedtime.

And because our clinicians work alongside parents and caregivers during real routines, you’re not just watching therapy happen. You’re learning strategies you can apply every day of the week, which means progress doesn’t stop when we leave.

Autism Diagnostic Evaluations in Charlotte

Charlotte families navigating a potential autism diagnosis often start one of two ways: a referral from their pediatrician, or concerns raised through Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). Both are valid starting points, but it’s important to know what each one does and doesn’t do.

CMS’s Exceptional Children program can evaluate your child and provide school-based support through an IEP, but a school evaluation is not a medical diagnosis and won’t unlock insurance or Medicaid coverage for ABA therapy. Programs like TEACCH (which has a Charlotte center) provide consultations and support, but also don’t replace a formal diagnostic evaluation. A medical autism diagnosis has to come from a qualified professional: a licensed physician, psychiatrist, or psychologist.

Our evaluations are conducted by a licensed psychologist and provide the formal documentation your family needs to access insurance-covered ABA. If you’ve already started the process through your pediatrician or CMS, we can pick up wherever that path left off.

Serving Families Across Charlotte and Mecklenburg County

We bring in-home ABA therapy to families throughout the Charlotte metro: from South Charlotte neighborhoods like Ballantyne, Myers Park, and SouthPark, to Uptown and NoDa, University City, Steele Creek, and Mint Hill. We also serve surrounding communities including Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Matthews, Indian Trail, Concord, Gastonia, and Fort Mill. If you’re in the greater Charlotte area, reach out, we’ll let you know how we can support your family.

Insurance & North Carolina Medicaid Coverage for ABA Therapy

North Carolina’s autism insurance mandate (SB 676) requires most state-regulated health plans to cover ABA therapy. For families on Medicaid, ABA is covered for children under 21 through the EPSDT benefit. In Mecklenburg County, Alliance Health is the regional Tailored Plan (LME/MCO) that manages Medicaid behavioral health services, including ABA authorization. Navigating Alliance’s process can be complex, so we help families understand their benefits and handle prior authorization from day one.

Yes. We work with families across Mecklenburg County and the surrounding metro, including Huntersville, Matthews, Concord, Indian Trail, Gastonia, Fort Mill, and more. In-home ABA is especially valuable in the suburbs where clinic locations are limited and traffic makes frequent trips unrealistic.

In Mecklenburg County, Alliance Health manages Medicaid behavioral health services as the regional Tailored Plan. ABA is covered for children under 21 through the EPSDT benefit. We help families navigate Alliance’s authorization process so you can focus on your child, not paperwork.

CMS evaluations through the Exceptional Children program can qualify your child for school-based support, but insurance-covered ABA therapy requires a formal medical diagnosis from a qualified professional. We can help you understand where you are in that process and what’s still needed.
