This matters especially for Asheville families: Asheville City Schools and Buncombe County Schools may evaluate a child and provide classroom support, but a school’s educational evaluation is not a medical diagnosis and won’t, on its own, unlock insurance or Medicaid coverage for ABA. A medical autism diagnosis has to come from a qualified medical professional — a physician, pediatrician, psychiatrist, or licensed psychologist. We can help you understand exactly what’s needed.

North Carolina’s autism insurance mandate (SB 676) requires most state-regulated health plans to cover ABA therapy, and North Carolina Medicaid covers medically necessary ABA for children under 21 through the EPSDT benefit — so for most families, out-of-pocket cost is little to nothing. For most families, yes. North Carolina’s autism mandate requires most state-regulated plans to cover ABA, and NC Medicaid covers medically necessary ABA for children under 21. In Western North Carolina, Vaya Health is the regional plan (LME/MCO / Tailored Plan) that manages Medicaid behavioral health services, including ABA, for Buncombe County.
